Pregnancy and life after birth can ask a lot of the body. Some days feel strong and steady. Others feel unfamiliar, tired, tender or full of change. Finding a calm space to move gently, breathe fully and feel supported can make a real difference.

The Creative Hearts is offering a free Maternal Movement Programme in North Finchley for pregnant and postnatal women, with two welcoming weekly sessions at Innovation Dance Studios, 2A Lodge Lane, North Finchley, London N12 8JR.

The programme includes:

  • Postnatal & Parental Somatic Movement Every Tuesday, 11:00am to 12:00pm

  • Prenatal & Postnatal Yoga Every Friday, 10:00am to 11:00am

Both sessions are completely free for a full term, with mats, blocks and all equipment provided. Thanks to funding from The National Lottery and Sport England, women in the local community can access supportive movement sessions without the pressure of cost.

A gentle space to return to your body

The new Tuesday Postnatal & Parental Somatic Movement sessions sit at the heart of this programme.

Somatic movement is a gentle, mindful approach to movement. Rather than asking the body to push, perform or stretch as far as possible, it invites a slower kind of listening. It gives space to notice how the body feels, how it moves, where it holds tension and where it may want more support.

For many women after birth, the body can feel different in ways that are hard to describe. Posture may have shifted. The pelvis, back, shoulders or neck may feel tight or tired. Core strength may feel less familiar. Breathing may feel shallow. Everyday tasks, from lifting a baby to carrying bags or getting up from the floor, can feel more demanding than they used to.

Somatic movement offers a kind way in.

In these sessions, movement is not about getting everything “right”. It is about slowing down, reconnecting and building trust in your body again. The class combines gentle movement, mobility, stretching, breathing, balance, light strengthening and relaxation. Each element supports the body in a careful, gradual way.

There is no pressure to be flexible. There is no expectation to be fit. There is no need to have done yoga, dance, Pilates or any movement class before.

You can simply arrive as you are.

What happens in the Tuesday Somatic Movement sessions

The Tuesday session runs every week from 11:00am to 12:00pm at Innovation Dance Studios in North Finchley. It is designed for women who are recently postpartum or up to two years after giving birth.

That time frame matters. Postnatal recovery does not follow one neat schedule. Some people feel ready to move sooner, while others need more time. Some feel physically well but emotionally stretched. Some are managing tiredness, feeding, caring responsibilities or the general adjustment of life with a baby or young child.

These sessions offer a steady, supportive space within that season.

A typical Somatic Movement class may include:

  • Gentle mobility for the spine, hips, shoulders and pelvis

  • Slow stretching that encourages ease rather than strain

  • Breathing practices to support calm and body awareness

  • Balance work to help restore steadiness

  • Light strengthening to rebuild confidence gradually

  • Relaxation to release everyday tension

The movements are simple and adaptable. That means each person can move at their own pace. If something does not feel right, it can be changed. If you need to rest, you can rest. If you want to take a smaller version of a movement, that is welcome too.

The aim is not to leave exhausted. The aim is to leave feeling more connected, more aware and perhaps a little more at home in your body.

Why somatic movement can feel so reassuring after birth

After pregnancy and birth, many women describe a sense of needing to “find” their body again. This can be physical, emotional or both.

Somatic movement supports that process through awareness. It encourages you to notice small details that are easy to miss during a busy day. The way your breath moves. The way your shoulders respond when you soften your jaw. The way your feet meet the floor. The places that feel tense, guarded or tired.

This kind of noticing can be powerful because it is gentle. It does not demand a big effort. It simply creates space to listen.

For postnatal women, that can support:

Greater body awareness

You begin to recognise what feels comfortable, what feels effortful and what may need more care.

Release of everyday tension

Feeding, carrying, lifting and lack of sleep can all show up in the neck, shoulders, back and hips. Slow movement and breathing can help soften some of that held tension.

Gradual confidence in movement

After birth, it is common to feel unsure about what movement is safe or suitable. A gentle class can help rebuild trust step by step.

A calmer connection to breathing

Breath can be a simple anchor. It can help you slow down and bring attention back to yourself, even for a few minutes.

A sense of time for yourself

This may be one of the most valuable parts of the session. For one hour, the focus is not on rushing, achieving or ticking things off a list. It is on you.

This blog is for information only and is not medical advice. If you have specific concerns after birth, pain, symptoms that worry you, or have been advised to follow particular guidance, speak with your midwife, GP or healthcare professional before joining.

You do not need to be fit, flexible or experienced

One of the most important messages from The Creative Hearts is simple: you do not need to be good at movement to come along.

Many people feel nervous before trying something new. That can be especially true during pregnancy or after having a baby, when the body may feel more sensitive, tired or unpredictable.

You might wonder:

  • What if I cannot keep up?

  • What if I have never done anything like this before?

  • What if I feel self-conscious?

  • What if I need to stop or adapt something?

The sessions are built with those questions in mind.

Every movement can be adapted to suit each person’s needs and pace. The atmosphere is warm, friendly and non-judgemental. You are not there to perform. You are there to explore gentle movement in a way that supports you.

It is also fine if your energy changes from week to week. Postnatal life can be unpredictable. Pregnancy can be too. Some days you may feel ready for more movement. On other days, breathing, stretching and resting may be enough.

Both are welcome.

Friday yoga for pregnancy and postnatal wellbeing

Alongside the Tuesday Somatic Movement sessions, The Creative Hearts also offers Prenatal & Postnatal Yoga every Friday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.

These classes provide gentle, pregnancy-safe yoga and movement for women during pregnancy and the postnatal period. The focus is on supporting mobility, strength, balance, breathing, relaxation and physical wellbeing.

Pregnancy can bring many changes to the body. As the weeks pass, posture, balance, breathing and comfort can all shift. Gentle yoga can offer a supportive way to move through those changes with more awareness.

For postnatal women, Friday yoga can also provide a steady return to movement. The pace is gentle, and the practice is designed to support the body rather than push it.

The Friday sessions may include:

  • Gentle yoga postures adapted for pregnancy and postnatal needs

  • Breath awareness and relaxation

  • Mobility for areas that often feel tight or tired

  • Balance and grounding work

  • Light strengthening to support everyday movement

Like the Tuesday sessions, the Friday class is welcoming and accessible. You do not need previous yoga experience. You do not need to know the names of poses. You do not need to arrive feeling calm already.

The class is there to meet you where you are.

A free full-term programme for the local community

A full term of classes can make it easier to build a rhythm. Rather than dropping into one session and then wondering what comes next, participants have the chance to return week after week.

That consistency can help movement feel more familiar. It can also create a sense of community. Seeing the same friendly faces, returning to the same studio and taking regular time for yourself can become a small but meaningful part of the week.

The fact that both sessions are free matters too.

Cost can be a real barrier, especially during pregnancy, maternity leave or the early years of parenting. By offering the programme free for a full term, The Creative Hearts is helping more women access movement, care and connection in their local area.

The programme is made possible through funding from The National Lottery and Sport England. Their support allows The Creative Hearts to provide sessions, equipment and a welcoming environment without asking participants to pay.

That means you can come along, try something new and give yourself time to move without worrying about class fees.

Which session is right for you

Both weekly sessions are gentle and supportive, but they have slightly different focuses.

Tuesday Postnatal & Parental Somatic Movement

Friday Prenatal & Postnatal Yoga

Best suited to women who are recently postpartum or up to two years after giving birth, especially those who want to slow down, reconnect with the body and rebuild confidence in movement.

Suitable for women during pregnancy and the postnatal period who would like gentle yoga, breathing, mobility, relaxation and pregnancy-safe movement.

Some women may feel drawn to one session. Others may enjoy both. If you are not sure where to start, the Tuesday Somatic Movement class is a lovely option if you are postnatal and want something very gentle, mindful and adaptable.

It is especially suitable if you feel unsure about returning to movement, if you have not moved much since giving birth, or if you simply want a calm space to notice how your body feels.

What to bring and what to expect

You do not need to bring any specialist equipment. Mats, blocks and other class equipment are provided.

Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move and breathe easily. There is no need for expensive activewear. Soft leggings, joggers or anything you can stretch in will do.

It can also help to bring water and anything personal that makes you feel more comfortable during the session.

When you arrive, expect a friendly welcome and a gentle pace. The session will not be competitive. You will not be asked to force your body into shapes. You will be guided through movement with options, pauses and space to listen to your own needs.

For many women, the hardest part is simply deciding to come for the first time. Once you are there, you may find that the calm studio, gentle guidance and shared experience make it easier to settle.
